On November 20 1973, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, the Who opened their Quadrophenia tour to a packed house. Four songs into their set, drummer Keith Moon passes out over his drum set due to a horse tranquilizer pill that he had somehow injested with alcohol backstage. The band leaves the stage and tries to bring Moon back around. After about 30 minuets they all returned to the stage and began playing again. Not even finishing the song, Keith Moon passes out again. This time, while Moon was being taken backstage, the Who continues to play. After they finish “See Me, Feel Me” without Moon, guitarist Pete Townshend calls out to the audience asking ‘Can anybody play the drums?” adding “I mean someone good”. 19 year old Scott Halpin, having arrived thirteen hours early to the show with a friend just to get good seats, stepped up and said that he could play. Halpin then took a shot of brandy for his nerves and got behind Moon’s set. He played 3 complete songs with the Who. Talk about lucky. If this were me, everyone who knew me would have been so sick of this story it wouldn’t be funny. Seriously, anytime anyone had a good story about something they did, I would be like “well, I play with the Who”. I literally wouldn’t do anything else with my life. Well this site is not about that story, I just really love to hear it. It motivates me to keep playing and never quit because you never know what will happen. Since this is site is about motivation and continuously striving to get better, the story fits. Another story that fits is the story of my dad. who passed away on April 11, 2006. He was a drummer and also was a roadie for Molly Hatchet on their first album. He is a huge reason why I am a drummer. When he died he was cremated and some of his ashes are in a small wooden box inside my drum set. Everytime I play, he hears it. Again this website is about motivation and continuously stiving to get better. It is for those who want to share their idea’s, stories and/or practice methods to improve other people playing and opening up of other peoples minds to new idea’s. Like my instructor says: “keep on doing what your doin” and as I always reply “Nobody can stop me”.
